A warm, late summer day was the scene for the 7th Annual Harvard
Medical School Petanque Tournament. This annual event was begun by french
expat employees of Harvard Medical School and the surrounding medical centers in
the Longwood/Brookline Avenue area as a sure cure for their "mal du
pays". This most recent edition was organized by Jean-Francois Rual
and saw 72 participants. The games were played on the stonedust walkways
of the Harvard Medical School Quad. Le Mistral Club sent along several players, who were split up and spread out among several teams. Players came from all over the greater Boston area as well as one visiting team from Paris. Nationalities included Algerians, French, Belgians, Americans, Quebecois, Swiss, Japanese and others, thus the true international appeal of Petanque was on full display. Albert Kallanian of Le Mistral Club was "drafted" onto a team which eventually took home the championship against the visiting Paris team in front of a large crowd gathered on the marble steps of the Medical School.
