FPUSA 2007 National Singles for Men and Women Clemente Field, Boston, MA 04 August 2007
Under cloudless skies and temperatures in the 90s, Le Mistral Club de Petanque hosted the FPUSA National Singles Championships for Men & Women at Clemente Field in Boston's Fenway neighborhood. Among the 22 Men and 5 Women were representatives from FPUSA clubs in MA, NY, ME, and FL.
The day saw some excellent level of play from some of the nation's top tier players. While the competition was challenging, the day also became one of surviving the searing heat. Play slowed down as participants required lengthy breaks in the shade between matches. The Men's final match was played under the gaze of spectators, appreciative of both the exiting level of play and the shade from the lone tree on the terrain. Jean-Pierre Subrenat (below, in white) of LBNY vs. Philippe Riand (below, in yellow) of Le Mistral Club battled back and forth, with the cochonnet alternatively shot out of the terrain on 4 consecutive ends at one point.
The final score of 13-6 did not fully reflect the nearly equal level of play of the match which took 17 ends before it concluded!
And the champion, in 1st Place, was Jean-Pierre Subrenat of LBNY ... 2nd Place went to Philippe Riand of Le Mistral Club... 3rd Place to Lahouri Baba of LBNY ... 4th Place went to Gilles Ray of LBNY ...
The Women's Singles Championship was played Round-Robin style, and the Winners were... 1st Place - Cynthia Stroud of Maine Boules Club (MBC), undefeated at 4-0 on the day
2nd Place - Joan Soilleux of the Boca Petanque Club
3rd Place went to Trish Crowley of Le Mistral Club (not shown). A great day of petanque topped off with cooling refreshments at nearby Thornton's Grill, then a later convivial dinner at the Eastern Standard Restaurant in Kenmore Square...
...where our hosts were kind enough to prominently display the article on that day's front page of the Boston Globe Sports page about Le Mistral Club and petanque in Massachusetts, which can be viewed here.
